Job Overview The New Mexico WIC Program, Department of Health and Family Health bureau, safeguards the health of nutritionally at-risk low-income pregnant, postpartum, and breastfeeding women, infants, children, and seniors by providing nutritious foods, nutrition information, health counseling, breastfeeding support, nutrition and cooking classes, and referrals to healthcare providers and social services. Why does the job exist? To screen applicants for eligibility by assessing income, residency, and nutritional risk, prescribe food packages, and provide group and one-on-one nutrition education, including breastfeeding promotion and support. The role also involves identifying needs for individual care plans, referring participants to other services, and documenting all services provided. How does it get done? Maintain effective WIC program operations by assessing and documenting nutrition risks, determining eligibility, prescribing food packages, providing nutrition education, and assessing breastfeeding needs. Obtain and assess hemoglobin and anthropometrics, and ensure quality client services following USDA guidelines. Who are the customers? Qualified pregnant, breastfeeding, and postpartum women, infants, and children up to five years old. Ideal Candidate Fluent in English and Spanish; experienced in data entry and retrieval from information systems including the NM WIC Data System; capable of providing nutrition services and coordinating with community organizations; knowledgeable about nutrition counseling and monitoring; and able to assist in food and nutrition programs. Minimum Requirements High School diploma or equivalent, with one year of WIC or related experience preferred. Education from an accredited institution or equivalent experience may substitute for experience. Must possess a valid driver's license and maintain a Defensive Driving Course Certification within six months of hire. Working Conditions Office environment with extensive computer and phone use, potential for extended driving, lifting up to 50 pounds, exposure to communicable diseases, and possible response to health emergencies outside traditional hours. Some travel may be required. Additional Information This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement.
