Job Description

Radiologic Technologist-Per Diem

Under direction of the Radiology Supervisor, to take routine radiographs for use in medical and surgical diagnosis and treatment; and to do related work as required.

This is the entry level of the radiologic technologist series. Incumbents in this classification perform routine radiologic procedures under close supervision, according to established protocols. This class is distinguished from Radiological Technologist II by the latter's performance of complex procedures. This is a flexible classification. Appointments to Radiologic Technologist II will be made depending on departmental needs, on the recommendation of the department head, and with the approval of the Director of Personnel.

Essential Functions:

  • Documents all information on the patient's images, consents, and other medical records.
  • Corroborates patient's clinical history with procedure, ensuring information is documented and available for use by a licensed independent practitioner. Verifies informed consent.
  • Applies the principles of patient safety during all aspects of radiology procedures, including assisting and transporting patients.
  • Identifies, prepares, and/or administers medications as prescribed by a licensed independent practitioner.
  • Assists licensed independent practitioner with fluoroscopic radiography procedures.
  • Performs non-interpretive fluoroscopic procedures as prescribed by a licensed independent practitioner.
  • Prepares rooms and patients for radiographic examinations; calls patients to Radiology Department and releases them to return to appropriate unit or clinic upon completion of examination.
  • Leads patients to dressing rooms and gives directions to them before examination.
  • Moves patients from gurney/wheelchair to examination tables.
  • Provides proper protection to patients according to prescribed safety standards, exercising personal safety precautions; shields and positions patients as required.
  • Selects proper technique and operates radiology equipment to make radiographs of designated portions of the body as requested by the physician.
  • Selects and uses proper immobilization and supportive devices when necessary; selects proper film, machine position and exposure procedures.
  • Prepares and administers contrast agent for examination; assists radiologist/physician in special studies and procedures.
  • Reviews images for proper identification and quality; works in the darkroom to process radiographs when required.
  • Maintains equipment and work areas in a clean and orderly condition.
  • Uses portable radiology equipment.
  • Provides cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first-aid to patients while in the department and;
  • Dependent upon area of practice or department assignments, demonstrates clinical knowledge and skill in the care of newborn, infant, toddler, child, adolescent, adult and/or geriatric patients ranging up to 100+ years of age.

Employment Standards: High School Diploma, G.E.D. or equivalent. Graduation from an accredited two-year program in radiologic technology approved by the Joint Review Committee on Education. Certification as a Radiologic Technologist issued by the State of California, Department of Public Health. Fluoroscopy certification by the State of California, Department of Health Services must be obtained within six months. Certification by the American Registry of Radiological Technologist (ARRT) as a Registered Technologist is desirable. Possess a current American Heart Association Responder or Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) card at time of hire. As a continued condition of employment, employee must maintain RQI Responder certification and competency. Employees must maintain all health requirements designated by Kern Medical Center.

Knowledge of: Modern radiology equipment and techniques; human anatomy and physiology; occupational and safety precautions for radiologic work; acute care hospital procedures; effective verbal and written communications and computer skills.

Ability to: Administer emergency first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation; maintain records and files; follow instructions; deal tactfully and professionally with patients, physicians and staff; maintain the strictest levels of confidentiality.

Supplemental: A background check may be conducted for this classification. All Kern County employees are designated "Disaster Service Workers" through state and local laws (CA Government Code Sec.3100-3109 and Ordinance Code Title 2-Administration, Ch. 2.66 Emergency Services). As Disaster Service Workers, all County employees are expected to remain at work, or to report for work as soon as practicable, following a significant emergency or disaster. If position responsibilities require driving a personal vehicle, then possession of a current valid California Driver's License and adherence to the Kern County Hospital Authority Vehicle Use and Driving Standard Policy (ENG-EC-119) is required. If position responsibilities require driving a vehicle owned, leased or rented by Kern Medical, then possession of a current valid California Driver's license, a signed authorization for Release of Drivers Record Information and adherence to the Kern County Hospital Authority Vehicle Use and Driving Standard Policy (ENG-EC-119) is required.
