Summary:

The Steward is responsible for the vessel’s daily food and food-related beverage service to guests as well as maintaining the cleanliness of guest cabins, corridors and public areas, consistent with the company standards and goals of providing excellent service according to the Core Values of True Alaskan Hospitality . Participate in evening entertainment activities as directed by the Hotel Manager.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Dining Room
    1. Responsible for friendly, courteous and gracious service to all guests.
    2. Responsible for front of the house service delivery to the guests in the dining room. This includes the setting of tables, preparing beverages for food service, meal service, providing beverage service and clean up, which includes proper storage of all dishes, silverware and glassware after washing as well as the cleaning of the dining room.
    3. Required to learn and understand daily menus and types of seafood served each day.
    4. Implementing and executing food service and cleaning procedures in accordance with the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation regulations in the dining room, lounge and cabins as outlined in the Safe Food Handling Manual and Cleaning Specifications Guide
  • Beverage Service
    1. Responsible for the daily set-up for social hour in the lounge, which includes and is not limited to appetizer set-up and delivery. Order-taking and delivery of beverages to guests as well assisting the bartender in cleaning up the lounge after dinner service begins. Assist the bartender with wine service during dinner.
    2. Required to learn Beverage menu served each day.
  • Housekeeping / Turn Day
    1. Provide cabin service and all related services including the daily cleaning and make up of cabins, maintaining and providing all cabin and bathroom supplies, distribution of guest amenities such as turn-down chocolates, parcels, gifts, paperwork etc.
    2. Responsible for complete turn on all cabins, common areas to ready vessel for new guests. Assists with the handling of baggage, laundry, stores and garbage.
  • Crew Member
    1. Follows prescribed hours set forth by the vessel’s daily roster.
    2. Holds a position on the Vessel’s Emergency Station Bill.
    3. Maintain awareness of basic safety rules, workplace safety and respect for the environment.
    4. Commit to understanding terrain and vessel itinerary.
    5. Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be minimum 21 years of age.
  • High school diploma or equivalent GED
  • TAP (Training for Alcohol Professionals) and Alaska Food Worker Card issued by DEC.
  • Must pass a security background check and DOT drug test.

  • 1-3 years of experience and/or education in the culinary or hospitality industry within the last 3 years.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and guest service aptitude.
  • Strong communication skills: verbal, non-verbal and written.
  • Ability to take directions and work with a diverse team.
  • Ability to interpret and follow rules, policy and procedures.

  • First Aid and CPR Certification.

Work Environment:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Crew stays in shared quarters onboard with little privacy and relatively constant vibration and engine noise often for long periods of time. This is a fast-paced and dynamic work environment with a diverse workforce. Crew may be moved from one vessel to another at the discretion of Management. Travel to the vessels in Alaska and extended stay up to 5 months on board is required. Must be physically able to work a typical workday of about 10-14 hours per day, seven days a week. Environmental conditions generally include ambient inside temperature, ambient inside lighting, ambient to loud noise levels, all weather conditions, occasional use of required protective clothing including raingear and life preserver. Occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Ability to walk on uneven deck surfaces crossing from vessel to vessel. Physically able to climb a 7-foot vertical ladder and fit through a 28-inch escape hatch.
